Allendale Public School Adds to Fund Balance 5 Consecutive Years
 
With the closing of the 2014-15 fiscal year, Allendale Public Schools’ Board of Education and
Administration added to Fund Balance for the 5th consecutive year. Superintendent Dan Jonker said,
“We are very proud of the stewardship of our Board and Staff in maintaining balanced budgets and
carefully monitoring our spending to ensure a quality education program without dipping into District
reserves.”
 
Allendale is the only District in Ottawa County that has operated the last five consecutive years without
using fund equity to balance its budget. With the economic recession beginning in 2009 and major per
pupil funding cuts in 2011, the Board of Education and Administration have made the necessary cuts in
staff and spending to balance the District’s budget while maintaining a positive educational experience
for its growing student population. “We are very appreciative of the collaboration of our unions and
other staff groups in working with us to ensure we can balance our budget on a yearly basis,” said Dr.
Jonker.

In July, Governor Snyder signed early warning legislation into law which requires School Districts with
fund balances less than 5 percent of the total budget to submit documentation to the Michigan
Department of the Treasury. Allendale’s fund balance is at 3.5% of total budget and has remained
steady while the District’s student enrollment increases.
 
The Allendale Board of Education will embark on a new strategic planning process during the 2015-16
school year to gather stakeholder input and create a plan for the future of Allendale Public Schools. Dr.
Jonker said, “Allendale is well-positioned for whatever level of funding the state legislature will provide
in the future because of our commitment to a balanced fiscal approach.” More information is available
