Meet our new School Resource Officer, Deputy John Ortman

A veteran School Resource Officer (SRO) has been assigned to Allendale Schools, providing a fresh perspective on school security and safety.  The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department has assigned Deputy John Ortman to the district beginning this school year.  He replaces Deputy Jake Mucha as part of a regular department assignment rotation.

Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Provides Staff Training to Keep Our Schools Safe

Keeping our learning community safe is a top priority for the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department (OCSD), as well as Allendale Public Schools staff. District teachers and select staff learned Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) with educators from the Sheriff's office. About 175 APS employees participated in the training, held in late August.

School Safety Drills Begin this Week for Students, Staff

Beginning this week, students and staff will be practicing required safety drills used in case of a fire, tornado, lockdown or school bus evacuation. Michigan's newest safety drill requirements became effective on July 1, 2014, and made changes to the number and type of drills required. There are also reporting requirements that all schools must follow.

Join Us to Learn What Behaviors are Affecting Allendale's Students Daily Lives

  • One (1) in 4 Ottawa County youth report having experienced depression in the past year. 
  • One (1) in 5 Ottawa County youth report being bullied; girls are much more likely to report being bullied than boys.
  • Youth in Ottawa County are reporting they are in a relationship less, but in the relationships they are having, unhealthy and harmful behaviors are increasing.

These are some of the countywide findings from the 2015 Youth Assessment Survey (YAS) conducted by PathwaysMI and the Ottawa County Department of Public Health.

APS Staff Certified to Administer EpiPens, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

The state of Michigan has enacted laws to protect the health of students who experience an allergic reaction or a cardiac emergency while at school. In compliance with these laws, the Allendale Public Schools has trained emergency response teams in each school to administer EpiPens or use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
