Allendale Middle School teaches students to support their community, build empathy for others, and increase literacy, while collaborating with parents to develop leadership skills. The first Read to Reach Out event, on March 24, will help eighth grade students raise money to create Giving Bags for Allendale.
"It is the goal of our school to create a community of givers," Teacher Lindsey Davies said. "We believe it is important to provide students with opportunities to think outside of themselves and take an active role in their community."
Most adults enjoy a P.E.T. project -- so why not have one at school?
Allendale Middle School teacher Shawn McMaster has been encouraging his eighth grade students to dive into a P.E.T. project as a way to jump-start their creativity and inspire learning.
The P.E.T. acronym stands for Personal Educational Topic. The program is based on "Genius Hour," and it allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period during school.
School social workers fill a unique advocacy role in schools.
Children are often affected by social forces that negatively influence their ability to be successful in school. School social workers are trained mental health professionals with a degree in social work who provide services related to a person's social, emotional and life adjustment to school and/or society. They are a link between the home, school and community in providing services to students, families and school staff to promote and support students' academic and social success.
Your Granny always knows best, right?
Ottawa County Department of Public Health believes in Grannies, too. That's why they encourage you to follow the advice of the "Flu Granny."
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness. Every year various strains of the seasonal flu circulate in our community causing "the flu" in tens of thousands of people.
