Hall of Fame Dinner Moved to Ceglarek Fine Arts Center

Due to the potential for bad weather on October 8, 2021, we will be moving the pregame dinner to honor the 2020-21 Allendale Hall of Fame inductees, to the Ceglarek Fine Arts Center. Dinner will be catered by Peppinos and there will be tables and chairs set up inside where it will be warm and dry.

Tickets can be purchased for $25 in advance at the high school office or at the door the day of the event.

This summer, you can check out books from the APS school libraries! The Early Childhood Center, Evergreen, Oakwood and the Middle School libraries will be open weekly from June 15 through August 12, 2021. The schedule is as follows:

The Amazing Reading Bus is Back!

The Amazing Reading Bus will be traveling to neighborhoods near you this summer beginning on June 21 and running through August 12! The bus is stocked with books for toddlers through middle school age students. It works just like a library, you may check books out and then return them when you are done or before the last day on the schedule. We are unable to stop at all of our Allendale neighborhoods, but you may visit any of the locations listed on the schedule to participate.

APS Announces Walk Zone

Knowing we had to make budget cuts this year, the goal at APS was to look at trying to cut in areas that do not directly impact student instruction. As the only school district in the Ottawa Area ISD without a walk zone, it made sense to look at implementing one for students living in close proximity to school buildings as a cost saving measure. When investigated, it was discovered that implementing a walk zone would save the district approximately $30,000 per year. The walk zone maps are below.

We understand there are a lot of questions about what school will look like for students choosing the face-to-face school option this fall. Your child's safety as well as the safety of our staff continue to be a top priority as we prepare to reopen school buildings. Our district will follow the Governor's Return to School Roadmap and comply with all of the Required safety protocols. In addition, our goal is to comply with as many of the Strongly Recommended and Recommended safety protocols as possible which are also outlined in the Roadmap. Michigan is currently in Phase 4 of reopening, therefore, the guidelines we are currently following for reopening are pages 21-36. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed to keep all students and staff safe, while continuing to meet the schooling needs of our community.

Early Childhood Center Ready to Welcome Our Youngest Learners!

Our Early Childhood Center opened last Thursday, August 22, for our students to tour and meet their teachers. Following the student open house, a dedication ceremony was held in the building's gym. Ceremonial keys were handed over to Superintendent, Dr. Garth Cooper, who welcomed the students and their families, staff and community members. We also heard remarks from Board President, Josh Thurkettle, as well as our building Principal, Mr. Blake Smolen. The high school marching band joined the festivities by playing the Allendale Fight Song and the community was then able to tour this beautiful facility. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our youngest learners on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 27!

Allendale Public Schools, Allendale Rotary, and the Allendale community are truly Doing More. Together with the Amazing Reading Bus! Every day of summer for the past 20 years, the Amazing Reading Bus travels to various locations around Allendale to provide a mobile library for kids in the community. Kids simply hop aboard the bus and pick out their favorite book. This helps keep kids reading all summer long!

Allendale Public Schools Board of Education have 2 Special Meetings coming up.

1) There will be public hearing on the proposed 2019-2020 budget for Allendale Public Schools. This will take place in the Oakwood Board Room on Monday, June 10, 2019, at 5:30 PM. The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of this hearing.

2) The Board of Education will conduct the Superintendent's review in the Oakwood Board Room on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 7:30 PM.

New Parent Resource Library Available in the Middle School

Thanks to an Allendale Foundation Grant, a parent resource library resides in the middle school. At this time, it is small, but with donations and additions, it will grow over time. Ms. Wilson, the school counselor, shared this:

“Our parents are our first resource to our students. We live in a day and age where life is so busy that we often meet each other coming and going. Parents need help navigating issues with their children so they can support them in their success. No one is an expert in everything, and many parents need education on a particular topic. With their limited time, a book may be just the ticket.”

All books are available in the middle school library for checkout. Thanks to Mrs. Oros, our media specialist, the checkout system is efficient. Books are available during the school day. However, if there is a title that you would like to read, we will put it up front for pick up. We just need an email, phone number and approximate time your would return it. Attached to the cabinet is a list of the titles for easy reference (see below). We are also taking gently ‘used’ books that parents may have to share.

High School Science Olympiad Places 10th at State, Middle School Places 13th

Congratulations to both our High School and Middle School Science Olympiad Teams!

High School

The 2019 Allendale High School Science Olympiad Team reached a milestone at the end of their season. On Saturday, April 27th, the team traveled to Michigan State University to compete in the State Tournament. The team’s goal at the beginning of the season was to make it to States and earn a place among the top ten. After a long day of competing, the Falcons reached that goal! Out of 60 teams at the State tournament, your Falcons placed 10th overall and came in 3rd for Class B schools. The first seven places went to Class A schools.

The Falcons were led to victory by the seven seniors on the team. Their leadership throughout the season helped secure a fun and successful season. The captains, Sam Brovont and Zach DuCharme, deserve a special shout out for their dedication and hard work over the past several months. They went above and beyond throughout the entire season and will be missed next year.

The Falcons scored in the top 10 in six out of the 23 events. However, It takes a whole team to pull off a victory. The rest of their team pulled the weight by scoring in the upper half in 21 out of 23 events. All members should be proud of their accomplishments!

Middle School

Congratulations on the Middle School Science Olympiad team on their 13th place finish at State. Only 60 teams qualified out of 300, so it was a priviledge just to get there and our students were awesome.

All-State awards go to Jacob Williams and Matthew Brovont in Fossils

Nolan Lehman, Mae Wittlief and David Smith were also All-State in Experimental Design.

Grace Scholten and Mae Wittlief were 1th in Crime Busters.

Also placing high were Lily Schmucker, Mia Placzek, Katie Holthof, Jack DeHaan, Corey Rozema, Jaden DuCharme, Liam Reynolds and Andrew Kurmas in various events.

Robin Kline Stands Out Among Ottawa County Math Teachers

Congratulation to Robin Kline who was chosen among secondary math teachers across Ottawa County - due to the strong academic growth shown by her students - to share ideas about what she does in her classroom at the first meeting of the Ottawa ISD Secondary Math Network.

Robin emphasized having high expectations, setting students up for success, and building strong relationships. It was so awesome to have an Allendale teacher featured among the highest-scoring teachers.

Next steps will be county-wide secondary math teachers visiting each other’s classrooms in learning lab formats throughout next year.

AWARD WINNING DEAF MUSICIAN SEAN FORBES TO GIVE FREE CONCERT

Deaf rapper Sean Forbes will give a free, family-friendly concert Thursday, April 18 from 7:00 – 8:00 PM at the Ceglarek Center in Allendale. After the show, Forbes will hold a “Meet and Greet” where fans may purchase merchandise, pose for pictures with Sean and have items signed by the artist. The Ottawa Area ISD sponsored event is funded through a grant from the Roerink Knoll Foundation. Tickets are first come, first served with over 700 seats in the auditorium.

Detroit-based Forbes lost nearly all his hearing after a bout with spinal meningitis when he was five months old. He learned to play drums and guitar while still in grade school, formed a band with his siblings, and began writing his own songs. Forbes has two albums and is the co-founder of the Deaf Professional Arts Network (D-PAN), a nonprofit organization that creates music videos featuring deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) artists. Forbes recently performed alongside the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with other deaf musicians including world-renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and jazz and pop singer Mandy Harvey.

Jennifer VerHelst, DHH teacher consultant for Ottawa Area ISD, said Sean Forbes is a great inspiration for her DHH students and the community as a whole. “He is an example of someone who worked hard and followed his dreams to get where he is today,” she said. “Ottawa Area ISD is so proud to host this free event and can’t wait to bring the community together.”

5th Grade Specials Field Trip

Our Oakwood 5th graders embarked on their "Specials" field trip this week. This field trip allows the students to participate in their specials (music, art, physical education and spanish) through new experiences. Our 5th graders got to experience art by visiting the Grand Rapids Art Museum, physical education by ice skating at Rosa Parks Circle, spanish by eating lunch at Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican restaurant, and music by attending a music appreciation program put on by the Grand Rapids Symphony. This year, one of our students, Claire Wittlieff, got the unexpected privilege of being the guest conductor of the symphony! Pictured above, Claire is directing the symphony in a Sousa March along with Symphony Conductor Varineau. What a great experience for all of our students!
